The Latest in Law Firm Marketing

Each week, the Legal Marketing Association pulls the most buzzworthy trends in marketing to help inspire its members.  This week we cover the latest iteration of the Mansfield Rule, starting with “New Version of Mansfield Rule for Legal Departments Launched to Boost Diversity in Leadership and Outside Counsel Ranks.”

1. New Version of Mansfield Rule for Legal Departments Launched to Boost Diversity in Leadership and Outside Counsel Ranks

Diversity Lab invites legal departments to join its pilot program to measure whether legal departments have affirmatively considered women, LGBTQ+, lawyers with disabilities and racial/ethnic minority lawyers — at least 50 percent of the candidate pool — for the legal department’s top roles and for outside counsel representation. Learn more about the project from the Diversity Lab.

2. Legal Departments Join Law Firms in Applying the 'Mansfield Rule'

The Diversity Lab took the next step to boosting diversity in legal departments and outside counsel ranks in April. The American Lawyer reported some of the areas where legal departments are asked to consider women and diverse attorneys include hiring, internal transitions and promotions of senior management, from general counsel to interns or temporary lawyer positions. Read further about the more encompassing initiative.

3. Bringing Diversity to the In-House World: Get Ready for the ‘Legal Department Edition’ of the Mansfield Rule

Writer Staci Zaretsky asks, “Which corporate legal teams are willing to hold themselves to these high standards?” when reporting on the April 4, 2019 release of the Diversity Lab’s Mansfield Rule: Legal Department Edition. Michael O’Connor, general counsel of MassMutual and one of the early sign-ons, says this will show that corporate counsel are not only “walking the talk” but are willing to hold themselves to “the same or even higher standards that we are with our outside law firms.” Read more in Above the Law.

4. The Rooney and Mansfield Rules: Diversity Programs in Structurally Different Industries

In the wake of the latest iteration of the Mansfield Rule, refresh your memory on how pro football’s Rooney Rule inspired the legal profession to address its diversity issues. Writer Heylee Bernstein’s OnLabor blog addresses the history and effectiveness of both rules and encourages a close watch and enhanced data to better evaluate the programs.

5. Positive Results Mark End of Mansfield Rule Diversity Pilot

More than a dozen law firms “increased the representation of women and people of color in their leadership positions within one year of implementing a rule designed to increase diversity in the hiring process.” As the industry looks to Mansfield Rule 2.0, read more in this Big Law Business evaluation of the initial Mansfield Rule program.
